Mrs. Wilson’s 7th Grade Healthcare Science Goes Forensic!
This week, our 7th grade Healthcare Science classes got to play detective while learning all about Forensic Science—the awesome mix of healthcare and the legal system.
We discovered cool careers like Forensic Pathologists (they study clues inside the body) and Forensic Nurses (they help patients while also collecting important evidence).
On Monday, the St. Mary's Police Department visited and showed us how to:
👉 Take fingerprints
👉 Learn how DNA is used to solve mysteries
Each student even got to take home their own child identification card to share with their parents.
It was an exciting way to see how science and healthcare help solve real-world crimes and mysteries! 🧬

Things are getting a little ducky around SMMS!
Students, keep your eyes open—you’ll soon spot random rubber ducks hiding around the school. Each duck has a strip of paper with the website address to order your yearbook.
If you find a duck, take it home and share it with your parents—then ask them to order your yearbook!
Yearbooks are currently at the lowest price of the year, so don’t miss out.
Get quackin’ and see if you can find a duck to take home!

SMMS Students Launch an Experiment Into Space! 🚀
During the 2021–2022 school year, 8th grade students at SMMS took on an out-of-this-world challenge—entering a national competition through NASA TechRise for a chance to send their own experiment into space. A team from Ms. Prince’s class was selected for the challenge!
Their mission? To explore how Oobleck—a fascinating non-Newtonian fluid—behaves in microgravity. The students spent weeks designing and building their experiment, which was then shipped out to fly aboard a Blue Origin rocket!
Although the launch was originally scheduled for late 2022, it faced several delays due to rocket availability. But now the wait is over—the New Shepard flight launched September 18 at 9 am EST from a site in Texas.
Now that the payload has returned from space, the experiment will be sent back to SMMS, where students will be able to see the results of their cosmic creation. Students Lauren Cox, Alex Spruell, Marie Blomeley, and David Ballum made up the winning team, who are now seniors at CCHS. Students from the CCHS robotics team also provided their expertise in coding to help ensure that the experiment worked flawlessly.

A huge thank you to SWFLANT and Jeff Brewer, STEM Engagement Lead, for generously providing our school with a STEM Makerspace cart! We’re excited to see our students explore, create, and innovate with these new resources. Scan the QR code to see an example of our cart.

Students in 6th grade practiced measures of central tendency using Skittles today. They sorted the candy to complete a tally chart/frequency table and then calculated mean, median, mode, and range. Thank you to all of the families and our PAWS PTO for donating Skittles so we could have this fun activity today!

Congratulations to Rosalie Cox for winning yesterday’s cross-country race in Brunswick. This was her 3rd straight 1st place finish of the season in the 3.1-mile race. She finished with a time of 22:35. On the boy’s team, Phoenix Usher finished 3rd overall out of 90 runners with a season best time of 19:37. Congratulations, runners!

Good afternoon! Wednesday was Constitution Day, a day to celebrate the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787. This important document established the foundation of our government and protects the freedoms we enjoy today. Take a moment along with our SMMS students to reflect on what the Constitution means and how it continues to shape our country.
Have a great afternoon.
