Dear Families,

We are writing to inform you about an incident that occurred at St. Marys Middle School yesterday. Yesterday morning, a student made a threat to shoot up the school. We take incidents like this very seriously and are working closely with local law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation. We have implemented our safety protocols and the student is in custody. There is no ongoing threat to our school community. I want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority.

We understand that this news can be alarming. We encourage you to talk with your children about the importance of safety and the seriousness of making threats. It is essential that we work together to foster an environment where our students feel safe and supported.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to school administration. We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate this situation.

It was a beautiful day to visit the 7th grade pollinator garden. Students in Mrs. Durden’s science classes participated in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census today. Students visited the pollinator garden to make observations and collect data on our local pollinator populations to share with the University of Georgia. They observed, identified, and counted a variety of bees, butterflies, wasps and other insects as they landed on zinnias, blanketflower, and Biden’s alba in the garden. Our students were excited to participate in pollinator conservation!

We are thankful for Lowe's donating to maintain our pollinator garden.

Safety Reminder!

School safety remains our highest priority. Families, we need your partnership in reminding and educating your children about the seriousness of making threats. What may seem like an innocent prank, or simply something said out of anger or frustration, can carry very serious consequences. Every threat, whether real or fake, demands an immediate law enforcement response, disrupts learning, and can result in life-changing legal prosecution.

We take EVERY threat seriously and will continue working closely with the St. Marys Police Department, Kingsland Police Department, and the Camden County Sheriff’s Office to ensure swift and decisive responses to all threats.

The safety of our students and staff will always be our top priority. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Protecting with Purpose,

Chief Kizzi Knight

As we kick off the new school year, please note that our transportation schedule may need some adjustments during the first week of school.

What to expect:
• Buses may experience delays as routes are optimized
• Phone lines are experiencing high volume - thank you for your patience
• Route changes will be addressed once all student schedules are finalized
• Additional route adjustments may be needed to address overcrowding
• Schools may hold students inside during unsafe weather conditions

We appreciate your understanding as our transportation team works diligently to ensure the safe and efficient transport of all students to and from school.

Parents,

We are excited to help make one thing easier for you.

We now have a link on our Website that will allow you to complete Excused Absence Note online.

You will find the link under the PARENTS TAB. You will still need a note, but you will be able to upload this through this link.

This should help with trying to depend on your student to deliver notes. We hope this helps.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰: School buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road. They’re designed to be safer than passenger vehicles in preventing crashes and injuries, and in every state, stop-arm laws exist to protect children from other motorists.
If you are driving, remember these simple rules:
– 𝐘𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐛𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 — don’t speed up — because the bus is preparing to stop. There are - likely students waiting to get on the bus or parents waiting nearby to pick up children.
– 𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 — and wait at least 20 feet behind the bus — because children are getting on or off the school bus. Stay stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving.
– 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone or bus stop.
𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 - 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐛𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧:
Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least 10 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Teach them to play it SAFE:
– 𝐒tay five steps away from the curb.
– 𝐀lways wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
– 𝐅ace forward after finding a seat on the bus.
– 𝐄xit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.
